Top 5 Kitchen Essentials

Whether you're cooking for large groups and family gatherings or a quick meal for yourself, you will most certainly benefit from having the proper tools at hand. Here’s a rundown of my favorite kitchen essentials that will simplify and enhance your cooking experience.

1. The Right Knife

The idea of chopping up vegetables is enough to send most people straight to the drive-thru. But with a properly sharpened chef's knife, prepping your meal will be easy and fun. A good knife is one of the most important tools in the kitchen. It is used in the preparation of virtually every meal and will be needed as much as any pot, pan, plate, or bowl. "A dull knife is a dangerous knife", as the saying goes, so be sure your blade stays sharp! Having a sharpener and a cutting board are obvious accessories, but none as important as the knife itself.

2. Coconut Oil (Or Other Oil of Choice)

Coconut oil is easily my favorite oil to use in most of my meals. Not only is it delicious, it is rich in Healthy Fats that are actually good for your heart, your brain, and your hormones. It happens to be abundant in lauric acid, a type of saturated fatty acid that, although it does raise cholesterol levels, mainly increases HDL, the healthy type of cholesterol that you want to be high. It has a high cooking temperature, making it ideal for stir frying, sautèing, and even baking!

Of course, there are some other nutritious and flavorful oils that can enhance the taste of your meal, just be sure to avoid canola oil and "vegetable" oils, which are actually shown to be BAD for heart health (not to mention, massively unsustainable to produce!)

3. The Right Salt

Although SALT has been seen as a detriment to health, The Right Kind of Salt can actually be a BENEFIT to your overall well-being! The ket ingredients you're looking for are Trace Minerals, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, oxygen, and hydrogen; minerals that your body needs for optimal functioning. A deeper look reveals that unprocessed, mineral rich salts can actually improve metabolism, increase insulin production, supports the thyroid and can even help regulate sleep patterns. There's a lot to be gained from using the best quality salts you can find. Enjoy the flavor and the added nutrition!

4. Garlic

Oh man, don't even get me started on garlic! It is one of my favorite "Herbs" to add to almost every meal. Of course, there are some people out there who don't like garlic, and it's not absolutely necessary for a full-flavored, delicious meal. But when you consider the multitudinous health benefits that garlic offers, you may rethink your feelings on the matter. Dr. Simran Saini, Delhi-based Nutritionist and weight loss consultant, applauds the medicinal benefits of garlic. She says, "The high sulphur content in garlic gives it antibiotic properties, helping keep the digestive system clean by flushing out toxins. It also builds the immunity against common cold and prevents heart ailments by clearing up blocked arteries. It is great for rejuvenation and healing of skin scars and gives a glow to the skin as it keeps digestion in top-shape." It has also been said to help prevent heart disease, regulates the blood pressure, and purifies the blood. There's so much to love about this generous little herb, feel free to use generously!

5. Herbs & Spices

The most obvious reason for cooking with herbs and spices is that they can transform your ordinary recipes into exciting culinary experiences. But there's a lot more to be gained from utilizing fresh and dried herbs to your meals. Certain herbs and spices will stimulate your appetite and improve your digestion and general well-being. Many are wonderful sources of concentrated micro-nutrients, like antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, that support your body's natural health-producing functions. It's an entire world of study discovering various herbs and their myriad benefits, one could spend a lifetime continuously discovering the healing properties of herbs - and, in fact, some people have! You don't have to be an expert, though, to find your favorite flavors, add them into your at home meals, and rest assured it's doing something great for your body!
